What is Halloween? Besides knowing that it falls on the last day of October, all things scary and goes bump in the night appears, and American children like to dress up and go around asking for sweets, what does it actually mean and how did it originate? Have you ever wondered?
Doing a search on Yahoo! Answers with the keywords “Origin” and “Halloween” actually gave me 168 answers! (the number 168 is lucky in Cantonese by the way – “prosperity all the way” – but I digress
) One Answerer, talesofafemalenoamd, asked “What is the true origin of Halloween? Where did trick-or-treating come from?“. Fiona replied, giving a really long and well-thought-out answer that highlights how the name “Halloween” came from (from the words “All Hallows’ Even”), where the scary bits came from (it originated from an ancient Celtic festival called Samhain) and even a small paragraph on trick-n-treat!
However, for an Asian country like Singapore, I think Halloween has become very commercialised. Pubs and clubs join in the fun by promoting Halloween-themed parties. Supermarkets sell candy and chocolates in shapes of ghosts, skulls and zombies. Horror movies are coming out in droves this Thursday in the cinema. To me, Halloween doesn’t mean anything much, but just another opportunity to have fun.
I think the Chinese “7th Month” freaks me out more! LOL! What about you? Does Halloween mean anything to you?

To me halloween in Singapore is more likely more catered towards teenagers and adults, from what i notice, its a night to go dress up as whatever freaky ghost, monster or vampire and attend functions in pubs, clubs and discos.there will be competition and the winner will be the scariest dressed person, they are spotted and given a prize.for children, its practically just another day.
but in the US,its when children dresses up as princesses, ghosts, vampires and many many varieties of pretty and scary looking outfits so they can go out trick a treating with their friends around the neighbourhood and shopping centres, having fun at the same time.the adults are not forgotten too…there are fantastic parties going on practically everywhere.its fun and at the same time you don’t have to worry about the real spirits or witchcrafts there in this millenium.
Asian customs are critically more quiet and serious.
Hungry ghost is where real spirits are around and it can affect people from all religion thanks to irresponsible people who burn offerings all over the places.innocent and clueless kids might just step over it and get haunted by the spirits causing sickness and bad luck.I resent that
The “7th Month” is a just a stupid event. Burning offerings is just silly. I can’t imagine things like paper tv, computer, colgate, car and etc… is only a pollution to the environment. I am happy if i can get a pc to surf the net after I die…
