A Trip to Avenue Q

Tags: , , , , ,

I caught the famous puppet musical, Avenue Q, last week. And boy, did I laugh my *bleep* off! You would think that when puppets are involved, perhaps the cast controlling the puppets would have their faces covered or something. But not for Avenue Q! It is so fascinating (and also a little distracting) to watch the puppets AND the cast’s expressions at the same time. :D

It’s like seeing 4 “people” singing at the same time, lol.

*Warning: spoiler ahead!* Avenue Q may be famous for the naughty songs and raunchy puppet sex, but the underlying theme is the search for one’s purpose in life. And what really strikes a chord in me was in one of the final songs called “The Money Song”, where Princeton tries to raise money to help Kate Monster to build her monster school. He sang,

“… helping other people out makes you feel fantastic! All this time I’ve been running around thinking about me, me, me – and where has it gotten me! I’m gonna do something for someone else! …When you help others, you can’t help helping yourself!”

Like Princeton, I think that people now have been too caught up in themselves. Thinking of “me, me, me” all the time. But if we really take the initiative to help others (you can start small by helping those near to you), and think more of others than ourselves, I think you will feel really happy.

So do share with us, have you ever done something or helped someone which made you feel fantastic in return? The Best Answer chosen will receive a little surprise, so do make sure you check your email often! ;)

It Sucks to be Me!

Well, not me, me. But if I were Princeton, the main character of the musical Avenue Q, it would definitely suck to be him! Talking about Avenue Q, the Singapore Repertory Theatre is bringing this naughty musical to our doorsteps starting 30th October at the Esplanade. Why do I call it “naughty”? Well with song titles like “The Internet is for Porn”, “If You were Gay”, “I’m not Wearing Underwear Today” and “You can be as Loud as the Hell You want (when You’re Makin’ Love)”, you can just imagine how entertaining this show will be. This musical is one of the top shows on Broadway and London’s West End. But what makes this musical different? Imagine watching an adult version of Sesame Street on stage… :D

Some of the cast members and puppets.

Avenue Q was first conceived by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx, and won several Tony Awards when it was staged on Broadway. Most of the characters are puppets and the main lead is Princeton, a fresh college grad on a search for the purpose in his life. While looking for a place to stay in New York, he stumbles onto Avenue Q and meets Brian, an out-of-work comedian, internet porn addict Trekkie Monster, kindergarten teaching assistant Kate Monster, Lucy the Slut and others. They are mostly in their twenties and thirties and face adult problems about life, work, money and relationships.

Felix Rivera as Princeton.

Well I’m happy to say that we’ve got onboard Yahoo! Answers 3 of the casts from Avenue Q with us this month! First up is Felix / Princeton, the university fresh grad. I’m sure all of us have wondered at some point in our lives what our purpose in life is. When we’re fresh out of school, we wonder, what do I do now with my degree? What do I really want to achieve? When we’ve worked for some years, we’ll think again, do I really want to work like this for the rest of my life? Where is the satisfaction in my life? What kind of mark do I want to leave upon this earth?

What do you think is your purpose in life?
